Lumbar Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR)

Minimally Invasive Spine Treatment -

Lumbar Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR)

The anterior approach, explained by Dr. Clavel:

"In this procedure, the lumbar spine is approached through the abdomen behind the peritoneum and a full discectomy is performed and the lumbar artificial disc is placed.

When comparing the anterior approach method against the posterior approach method, we find that the anterior approach offers distinct advantages to the patient.

Firstly as there is no need for back muscle dissection, muscle pain or muscle atrophy which can cause chronic pain later on, is avoided.

Secondly, the possibility of nerve injury is remarkably decreased as there’s no nerve manipulation.

Thirdly, blood loss is significantly less as there is no need to perform cuts in the bone as is needed when a posterior approach is performed.

Finally, because we place a motion preserving device (artificial disc) unlike fusion surgery, it is a motion preserving surgery and adjacent segment degeneration is avoided.”

Dr Clavel and his very experienced team perform all surgeries at the Quiron hospital in Barcelona. The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and patients are usually discharged after 48 hours after receiving surgery."
